Usually patients have no discomfort with a loose bracket. We will recement it at your next visit.
If it is causing discomfort slide it into a more comfortable position and / or apply the wax we have given you.
This is normal with braces treatment. Like a new pair of shoes, you can get sore spots. The skin will toughen up and the sore spot will disappear eventually.
To speed up this healing, use the wax we gave you when the braces were fitted.
Take a small piece of wax. Warm it between your fingers. Apply this small ball to the bracket that is causing the sore spot.
If the sore spot is very panful you can try the following pain killing medicines. They are available through your chemist without a prescription.
- Bonjella
- Diflam
This problem is usually due to the wire moving around within the brackets.
First try sliding the wire around in the opposite direction to the sore spot. If this works then no other treatment is needed.
If this doesn’t work
Then apply small ball of warmed wax to end of wire
If this doesn't work then remove the wire
Firstly try to slide wire out
If this doesn’t work then you will need to cut the wire and remove the piece carefully.
To cut the wire you can use the following tools
- Nail cutter

- Small wire cutter

Cut the wire in several places and slide out the sections

This wire usually has a small elastic band holding the wire into a slot on both sides.
The reason it comes loose is that one of these elastic bands has broken. Use a toothpick to take any rubber bands off. Slide the wire out.

The clasps are what hold the plate in the mouth. They grip onto the teeth. They are difficult to adjust and we recommend you don’t try to adjust them
The easiest solution is to use denture adhesive. This is either a powder or paste which you apply to the fitting surface of the plate. It temporarily glues the plate into the mouth. It is non toxic and needs to be washed off each day.
Denture adhesives are available from your chemist without a prescription. Below are some common adhesives.
- Polident
- Sea Bond

The sore spot is most likely due to a small piece of the plate plastic pressing too hard against the gums. This can sometimes happen when the plate is being expanded. The most common areas are on the tongue side of the lower plate.
You can try to fix this at home. Take the plate out. Look where the sore spot is in the mouth. Try to find the area on the plate that corresponds to the sore spot. Use either fine sand paper or a nail file and polish the plastic in this area
If the sore spot is due to the screw area or slot area then apply wax
